I just had my first real viral Pin on Pinterest this month and it’s bonkers to see how sometimes when you follow ALL the rules, the rules fly out the door and the search engine that is Pinterest, does it’s own thing. Let’s talk about it.

The Viral Pin:

This pin is from my personal blog, the Vintage Inn and it’s an image from my blog post on ‘The Halifax, Nova Scotia Women Volunteers of WW2‘ and is posted on my Pinterest Profile (fun fact! My profile has over 12K followers and currently receives 1.5m monthly views).

So what happened? Here is my expert advice as a marketing specialist for 20 years (with a focus on Pinterest the last 3).

Full truth…WHO KNOWS! None of the “Pinterest Best Practices” were in play for this pin, so let’s talk about the pin itself and why you should..NEVER DELETE PINS!

The pin that went viral, is a square image and the description is old (2018) and not what 2024 Elizabeth would of written. When I started to take Pinterest marketing serious, all my mentors said “delete bad pins”, “delete pins that are not landscape”, “delete pins that the image does not look great” etc. I found one blogger who said “NEVER DELETE PINS” and when I read her reasoning (basically, this 2018 viral pin is the reason), I stopped deleting and just left them and moved onto to creating fresh pins out of old content.

Now if I had deleted this pin when I thought I should, I would never of seen 7 days of 943 blog post visits from Pinterest. I also saw a rise in my newsletter signups during this time. So there you go.

My stats are now dropping (typical of anything viral) but for a blog that is super niche, I am beyond happy with those results.
